The process that resulted in this book began in 1980, when several people recovering from substance abuse felt something still was missing in their lives. The group spotted reference to the "clear-cut directions about how they recovered" in the first 103 pages of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, written by William G. Wilson ("Bill W.") with help from cofounder Robert H. Smith ("Dr. Bob") and other early members of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). These few individuals gathered in a trailer at an airport in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, to study these directions, and, after applying the concepts to their own lives, they became aware of a gradual physical and emotional transformation within themselves. As a result, a structured format evolved out of their study group. As time went on, people from all walks of life traveling the road of personal discovery and wanting to learn more about this "design for living" began to participate in the process. They realized that this program, while based on the 12 Step Program, wasn't purely one of identifying with a particular personal difficulty or substance abuse issue, since those were merely symptons of what was truly missing in their lives. More study groups were started, and now Big Book Step Study Groups can be found meeeting all over the world. Unable to ignore their burning desire and sense of obligation to share this message with others, three members, having completed this process, converged once again. This time they would discuss how to unite the Big Book Step Study Group process into a book for anyone and everyone wanting a better and more spiritual life, while adapting the traditional 12-Step model to meet the needs of all readers. They met in a little church in Durham, New Hampshire, USA, on a weekly basis, inviting input from countless others as well. As a result, THE SEVEN LESSONS for Living, Learning and Working with Spirit was written as a means of providing a vast array of experiences, stories of unity and strength and lessons for creating a joyous and meaningful life. In group settings members remain anonymous, in order to encourage openness and confidentiality. This process is not aligned with any religious affiliations or outside organizations, and there are no fees required. The only requirement is a willingness to listen and learn from those who have completed The Seven Lessons process, so that your own understanding will in turn, be of service to others.
